Transforming Math Instruction with ASSISTments Coaching: A Maryland Teacher’s Journey to Data-Driven Success

In Maryland classrooms, fifty-five teachers are leveraging ASSISTments to enhance math instruction for nearly 3,000 students. As part of the fully funded ASSISTments for Maryland Middle Schools Initiative, made possible by the Maryland Partnership for Proven Programs, this effort expands access to evidence-based interventions that improve student outcomes.
This initiative goes beyond providing free, research-backed resources – it empowers teachers with a two-year coaching model designed to transform instructional practice. Educators participating in the program learn how to integrate formative assessment routines, analyze student data, and refine their teaching strategies to drive success. Through ongoing personalized coaching, teachers receive the targeted support they need to seamlessly embed ASSISTments into their daily instruction.
A Teacher’s Journey: From Experimentation to Transformation
One Maryland teacher’s experience showcases the power of this model. Initially, they used ASSISTments sparingly, relying on other edtech tools that fell short in providing actionable insights. After their first coaching session, they decided to fully integrate ASSISTments into their instruction to reap the benefits of student diagnostics, self-paced practice, and review.
The impact was immediate. Students became more engaged in problem-solving, and the teacher gained real-time data to guide responsive instruction. Over time, they phased out other tools, making ASSISTments the cornerstone of their formative assessment practice.
The Power of In-Person Coaching
At ASSISTments, we know that one-and-done training is not effective. Instead, we provide ongoing support to ensure that you and your students are successful. Partnership schools receive 3-5 coaching visits during the school year. These visits will include a non-evaluative classroom observation and a coaching session to analyze data, plan for instruction, and/or problem solve any relevant barriers.
In-Person Coaching played a pivotal role in this transformation. With direct, hands-on support, this teacher saw firsthand how ASSISTments streamlined their workflow, deepened student learning, and fostered greater student ownership
As they put it:
"Now that I have ASSISTments, I'm relying less on other programs and using the curriculum-connected resources more. I'm able to truly see what my students know and are able to do, and can allow them to take ownership of their learning instead of relying on me to walk them through everything."
This success story is just one example of how ASSISTments—paired with sustained coaching—creates lasting impact.
